Velma Jane Evans was born February 24, 1932 in Elida, to Olivia Aquilla and Jess Clint Dodgin and died April 25, 2019 in Portales at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 28 days. Mrs. Evans graduated from Portales High School in 1950, and a few days later, on May 26, she was married to Oscar Evans, Jr.
Their first home was in Dora where they farmed for a brief time before moving to Portales. In 1980, she became the Office manager for the new Alco Store, and remained there until it closed in 1999. She enjoyed sewing and playing the piano, and doing yard work, but her main enjoyment came from her family. She loved each of them in a special way, and especially enjoyed being a grandmother. Her home was filled with all sorts of knickknacks and collectibles. She had a number of cuckoo clocks.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Karen Evans and two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Mickey Paden and Robbie and Lemon Dotson all of Portales; eight grandchildren, Cyndi and Billy Melton, Brian and Jody Paden, Scott and Dena Paden, Cassie and Stephen Hardin, Joey and Wendy Dotson, Jeremy and Nikkie Dotson and Brandon and Garrett Evans; and 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister and brother-in-law, Beola and Melvin Thompson of Portales. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Clinton Dodgin, Marion Dodgin and Jesse Dodgin; two sisters, Julie May Ritchey and Fern Dodgin and by her beloved husband, Oscar, who died February 13, 2007.
