The Rosary for Alfredo Bachicha, Jr., 96, of Portales will be recited at 12:30 PM, Mon., Jan. 30, 2023 at St. Helen Catholic Church, and will be followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 1:00 PM with Fr. Francisco Carbajal as the Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Tony Pena, T. J. Rodriguez, Isidro Sanchez, Raul Salazar, Patrick Vigil, Jr., Delbert Duran, Jonathon Conrad and Lucas Bachicha serving as pallbearers. All of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. Military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post #31.
Alfredo Bachicha, Jr. was born June 15 1926 in Encino, NM to the home of Mary (Tenorio) and Alfredo Bachicha, and died at his home, surrounded by his beloved family, early on the morning of Jan. 25, 2023. Al served in the US Navy during World War II. Following his discharge at the end of the War, he returned to Encino, and it was there on Sept. 20, 1946, that he was married to Julia Ann Baca. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Accounting in Albuquerque. At the completion of his schooling, they moved to Portales to make their home. Al worked as a bookkeeper at Herbert Lumber, Kemp Lumber and at the Sweet Potato Plant before becoming the Purchasing Agent for Eastern New Mexico University in 1968. He retired in 1988 after 20 years of service.
During his retirement years, Al and his wife enjoyed traveling. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He faithfully cared for his wife during her last illness. He was an active member of St. Helen Catholic Church where he was involved in various ministries, and helped to run the Bingo nights. Al was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was active in the Cursillos movement.
He is survived by five sons, Manuel Bachicha and Phillip Bachicha of Portales, Joe (Nora) Bachicha of Truth or Consequences, NM, Chris Bachicha of Portales and Michael (Rhonda) Bachicha of Atlanta, GA; seven daughters, Veronica Pena and Inez (Teofilo) Rodriguez of Portales, Rita (Isidro) Sanchez of Odessa, TX, Patty Salazar, Kathy Vigil and Becky (Delbert) Duran all of Portales, and Lucy (Kelly) Conrad of Ofalla, IL; 33 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Tomas Bachicha of Albuquerque and a sister, Maria Antonia (John) Zumbrun of Los Angeles, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James and Richard Bachicha, five sisters, Margie Ortega, Josie Gallegos, Terri Luna, Gloria Ortega and Connie Sisneros, and by his beloved wife, Julia who died June 4, 1993 after almost 47 years of marriage.
