The Rosary for Alfredo “Fred” Chavez, 92 of Portales will be recited at 9:00 AM, Wed., Mar. 25, 2026, at St. Helen Catholic Church, and a Communion Service will follow at 10:00 AM with Deacon Paul Benoit officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Joshua Chavez, Jonathan Chavez, Angel Lozano, Stephen Sena, Michael Sena and David Lopez serving as pallbearers.
Alfredo Venancio Chavez was born May 18, 1933, in San Ignacio, NM to the home of Guadalupe (Madril) and Herlindo Chavez and passed from this life on Mar. 20, 2026, in Amarillo, TX. Mr. Chavez began working with his father at a very early age hauling water, working sometimes at a rock crushing operation, and helping in his father’s mechanic shop.
On Oct. 5, 1953, at Gonzales Ranch, NM he was married to Arselia Lopez. He moved to Kansas for a short time helping on his brother’s ranch. They later moved to Albuquerque, where he worked for a short time at a bakery, and then at a mechanic shop. In the early 1960’s, he brought his family to Portales, and shortly after that he began working for Baldock and Sons Tires in Clovis. After he retired in 1995, he enjoyed working at his ranch near Santa Rosa. He was happiest tending to his cattle and his land. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Teresa Chavez of Portales; a daughter, Guadalupe Kennedy and her life partner, Richard Gormany of Portales; three grandchildren, Joshua Chavez of Portales, Krystle Chavez-Lozano and her husband, Angel of Lubbock, TX and Jonathan Chavez and his wife, Monica Delgado-Chavez of Portales; three great-grandchildren, Noah and Cruz Lozano and Roman Chavez. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Cruz, Begino and Crystobal Chavez and by his wife, Arselia who died Sept. 3, 2021.
