Betty Jean Wells

Graveside services for Betty Jean Wells, 89, of Amarillo, TX will be held at 10:00 AM, Thurs., July 7, 2022 in the Portales Cemetery with Ben Mereness officiating.  All of her many friends will be honorary pallbearers.  Those who desire to make memorials in her honor may send them to Golden Plains Church of Christ at 4700 W. I-40, Amarillo, TX 79106.

Betty Jean Wells was born Nov. 3, 1932 in Grimes, OK to the home of Polly (McManus) and L. D. Wells, and died July 3, 2022 in Amarillo, TX.  The family moved to Portales in 1939, and Betty Jean graduated from Portales High School in 1951.  After attending Draughon’s Business College in Lubbock, she began a forty-five-year career with Connecticut General Insurance Company in the land lending department.  The company eventually became known as CIGNA.  Betty Jean was transferred to Dallas, TX where she worked for a time before being transferred again to Connecticut.  When she retired in 1998, she moved to Amarillo to make her home so she could be close to her brother, Woodrow and his family.

Betty Jean was a faithful member of the Golden Plains Church of Christ where did volunteer work.  She enjoyed cooking and collecting cookbooks.  She was always ready to furnish a meal or treats for any occasion.  Betty Jean spent a lot of her time working in her yard and decorating it.  Her little dog, Polly, was always right there with her.  She was the apple of Betty Jean’s eye.

She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Woody and Terri Wells of Pampa, TX; as well as several nieces and nephews.  In her neighborhood, she had several special friends.  She was preceded in death by her mother and father, two brothers, L. D. and Pete Wells and two sisters, Helen Melton and Mary Esser.
