Clovie Chunn Obituary

A memorial service for Clovie Chunn, 80, of Portales will be held at 1:00 PM, on Mon., May 22, 2023 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel.

Clovie Chunn passed from this life on the morning of May 10, 2023 at his home in Portales.  Clovie Lewis Chunn was born July 27, 1942 to the home of Nola (Stringer) and Clovie Stewart Chunn.  His family lived in several places in Roosevelt County when he was a boy.  Clovie graduated from Elida High School in 1960, but because of his several moves growing up, he had numerous friends throughout the area.

In the mid 1960’s, and his friends formed a band known as Country Bridge, and for the next several years they entertained in countless venues.  Among the places they played were the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, NV, countless venues in Roswell and Ruidoso, numerous military bases across the country including Alaska, as well as international performances in Greenland and Iceland.  When they disbanded in 1978, Clovie went to work as a supervisor at the TMC, the Greyhound Bus factory in Roswell, NM.  At one time he owned a grocery store in McCamey, TX and at another time a convenience store in Missouri.

Clovie moved back to Portales to make his home in the late 1990’s, and became the Loss Prevention Officer for Wal Mart.  Not only did Clovie work in the local store, but also trained officers for various stores throughout the area.

On April 23, 2013 in Portales, Clovie was married to Valerie Kay Sharp.  The couple enjoyed camping and hunting for arrowheads.  In years past, Clovie made several items such as cutting boards and other projects from wood.  He was an avid genealogist as well.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie of their home; his daughter, Cindy Justus-Watts of Los Lunas, NM; his bonus son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Nicole Gutzler of Texico, NM; his grandson, Jerrad Watts as well as his bonus grandchildren, Gabriel Bailey and Caleb, Cody, Justin, and Taylor Gutzler; two sisters, Chari Wood of Roswell, NM and Sue Inge of Portales; as well as a number of nieces and nephews and other family members.  Clovie was preceded in death by both of his parents, a brother, Bo Chunn, a sister, Carmen Woods and by his son-in-law, Jerry Watts.
