A graveside service for Dennis Darrow, 89, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in the Portales Cemetery with Pastor C.J. Garrett officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Portales American Legion.
Dennis Darrow died at his home in Portales on August 9, 2025. He was 89 years old. He was born on May 14, 1936 in Collingsworth County, Texas to Margie (Gill) and Raymond Darrow.
He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1962 and was stationed a year in Keflavik, Iceland from 1957 to 1958. He came to Portales in 1962 with his wife Joyce. He worked at several car dealerships including Bynum Motors, Cooper-Hobbs Chevrolet, and Hamilton GM Country. He retired at Hamilton's on October 31, 2008 after working for more than 45 years in the automotive business.
In the late 1970s, he was a volunteer member of the Roosevelt County Sheriff's Reserves, and he once served as president of the local CB radio club, the Goober Gulch Gabbers. He also served as the adjutant of American Legion Post 31 in Portales from 1996 to 2021, and was a member of the Portales Masonic Lodge #26 where he sometimes served in the Master Mason position. He has been a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Portales for several years.
He is preceded in death by his wife Joyce Darrow, his brother Harold Ray Darrow, and his brother-in-law Gail Allyn Starnes. He is survived by his son Gary Darrow.
