Estella Christine (Garcia) Garcia

A viewing for Estella Garcia, 64, of Portales will be at Wheeler Mortuary from 8:00 AM, Wed., June 10, 2021 until 12:00 noon on Thursday.  A committal service will be held in the Portales Cemetery at 2:00 PM, Fri., June 11, 2021.

Estella Christine Garcia was born May 26, 1957 in Las Vegas, NM to the home of Nellie Grace (Hern) and Cristobal Salas Garcia and died June 7, 2021 in Portales, NM.  The family moved from Las Vegas in 1963, and eventually settled in Dora where Estella graduated from high school in 1975.  She was very active in sports during her school career, and acted as the Coaches' Assistant and team manager for several of the teams.  Following her graduation, she attended Eastern New Mexico University, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Medicine.  In 1983, she completed a Master's Degree in Psychology.  At that time she moved to Las Vegas, NM where she held several different jobs, and took additional courses in Sports Medicine at Highlands University.  In 1987, she moved to Albuquerque, where she was the store manager for the original Blake's Lot a Burger.  After six years she went to work at Plastics Corporation where she became interested in OSHA compliance and safety.  When the plant closed, she returned to Portales and was employed in Food Services at ENMU.  She left the university, to become Production Manager at the Portales News Tribune, but later returned to Eastern to become Safety Coordinator for Sodexo Food Service.  Estella retired in Jan. of 2020.  She enjoyed bird watching, fishing, gardening, and was always up for a drive.  Throughout her lifetime, she had raised goats and chickens.

She is survived by her daughter, Francis Garcia of Portales; two brothers, Paul Garcia and Sam Garcia both of Portales and a sister, Teresita Tananka of Bristol Bay, AK.  She was preceded in death by both of her parents.
