Freeda (Vernon) McBride

Graveside services for Freeda McBride, 93, of Portales, will be at 10:00 AM, Mon., Aug. 3, 2020 in the Portales Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Moore officiating.

Freeda McBride was born Nov. 11, 1926, in Herefored, TX to the home of Cora (Reeves) and James Anderson Vernon.  She was  the eleventh child in a family of fourteen children.  Freeda died early on the morning of July 26, 2020 in Portales, NM where she had lived for the majority of her life.  On May 28, 1944, in Portales, she was married to Jim Ferguson McBride.  Freeda worked at Price's Creamery, where she made butter and ice cream.  Later she was a donut cook at Allsups 7-11.  For a time, she had a rural paper route for the Portales News Tribune.  She was even a substitute mail carrier for the US Post Office.  Her last formal employment during the 1970's and early 1980's was at the Commissary on Cannon Air Force Base.  Since then, Freeda did child care for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and countless other children to whom she became "Grandma."  She was a faithful member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ.

She is survived by a daughter, Wynette McKillip of Portales; a daughter-in-law, Barbara (Mrs. Walter) McBride; a son-in-law, Bill Brooks of Stanton, TX; 7 grandchildren, John (Gina) McBride, Jimmy (Krystal) McBride, Shelley (Eusebio, Jr.) Ramirez, Scot (Paula) Brooks, Kathy McKillip, Richard (Leslie) McKillip and Randy (Rebecca) McKillip; 14 great-grandchildren, Lili McBride, Bonnie (Juan) Hinojosa, Hillary Ramirez, Megan, Marshall, Ashli, Aaron, Joshua and Mariah Brooks, Donald, Cole, Jaden, Ali and Riley McKillip; 8 great-great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Ramirez, Elijah and Noah Hinojosa, Andrew Capri, Selene and Evan Ramirez and Maddox Brooks; a sister, Yvonne Vernon Johnson of La Mesita, NM and a sister-in-law, Gladys McBride Hollars.  She was preceded in death by her parents, 6 brothers, Durward, Perry Charles, John Ivan, and Ralph Vernon as well as by a baby brother; six sisters, Ova Pitts, Uva Vernon, Alva Summers, Dortha Brannon, Veda Huggins and Loretta Ellerd; a son, Walter Wesley McBride, a daughter, Wilma Yvonne McBride Brooks, a son-in-law, Donald McKillip, two grandsons, William and Craig Brooks and by her husband, Jim Ferguson McBride.
