Hershel Carmichael Obituary

Hershel was born in Portales, NM on March 21, 1948, to Mavis and Weldon Carmichael who preceded him in death in 2007 and 2015, respectively. He passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Hershel graduated from Causey High School in 1966. In high school he was active in baseball, basketball, FFA and state commerce club. After graduation he attended Eastern New Mexico University where he received a degree in Business Administration. He then went on to serve 6 years in the Army National Guard. Hershel also obtained his real estate brokers license specializing in farms and ranches.
Hershel was a 3 rd generation farmer in Causey. He loved farming even with the challenges of drought, sand and hail storms and early freezes.
Hershel is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sheri Carmichael, daughters Shannon Carmichael (Rhonda), Lea Henry (Robert) and grandchildren Colton and Grace Henry, one sister Vicki Price, niece Tracy Price and nephew Travis Price (Tamara) and two great nephews, Travin and Truitt Price, and many cousins and friends.
Hershel was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He was overjoyed when he and Sheri got the opportunity to retire and move to Texas to be near the kids and grandkids. Although his retirement was cut far too short, he was able to enjoy time with the family and friends, new and old for several months. Throughout Hershel’s illness he had wonderful and dedicated team of caregivers (Bree and Armisha) along with a knowledgeable and kind group of doctors. The family never left his side throughout his illness and takes comfort in the fact that he was loved and cherished each day.
Hershel was cremated and a celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.
The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home or the charity of your choice.
