Celebration of Life for Janice (Jan) Arlene Ketcham Self, 78, of Portales will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, January 8th, 2023 at Southside Church of Christ with Doug Hale officiating.
Jan was born to William and Velma Irene (Kindt) Ketcham in Walsenburg CO, June 27, 1944.
Jan was the third child of seven. Three brothers, three sisters.
Early in life, Jan went to work on a dude ranch learning to cook and then moved back home to finish school and care for her sisters. Her senior year, she worked for a doctor to help pay off her parents’ medical bills. This is where she gained her medical knowledge.
She married Joe Casey and moved to California, where her son William (Bill) Offerd Casey was born. Jan then moved back to Belen, NM, and then to Portales, NM, where her daughter Constance (Connie) Casey Sawyer was born. She went to work at the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home (NMCCH) for several years as a house parent.
She moved to her country home in Portales and cared for her parents until their death. During this time, she sold insurance, started the Christian Massage Center, bought four duplexes and rented them out.
In 1999, she married Jack Self and started working once again for the NMCCH in public relations. She loved people and visiting with everyone she met. Her 20 years of service in the Public Relations Department was very beneficial to the Home.
Jan loved gardening, growing roses, her corgis, playing cards with her girlfriends, laughter and her Southside Church Family, which she has been a member of since the beginning of the church.
Jan loved her Lord from early childhood and was ready to meet him.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, William and Velma Irene (Kindt) Ketcham; three siblings; children, William (Bill) Offerd Casey and Constance (Connie) Casey Sawyer; and brother-in-law Terry Peddicord. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Jack Self; five stepchildren; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; brother Charlie Nicholas Ketcham and wife Perlina; sister Helena Sue (Ketcham) Brinkley and husband Blas; sister Marlene Kay (Ketcham) Peddicord.
Memorials can be sent to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home.
