Funeral services for Jesus Payen, 61, of Clovis will be held at 11:00 AM, Fri., Feb. 9, 2024 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Don Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Sammy Viscaino, Daniel Viscaino, David Gutierrez, Raul Viscaino III, Colby Mestas, Aiden Mestas, Raymond Payen, Jr. and Matthew Poynor serving as pallbearers. All of his nieces and nephews and his former co-workers will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Jesus Manuel Payen, Jr. was born May 17, 1962 in Portales to the home of Anita (Guerero) and Jesus Manuel Payen and died at his home in Clovis early on the morning of Feb. 6, 2024. Mr. Payen grew up in Portales and attended the Portales schools. On Nov. 22, 1979 in Portales, he married his high school sweetheart, Arcilia Viscaino. The couple had two children, a son and a daughter. In 1980, her joined the National Guard, and served until 1984.
Manuel was a brick layer by trade, and first worked with his father in Payen Construction. Later he worked for a variety of contractors, working throughout the area building schools, prisons, and other buildings. He became disabled in 2020. When he wasn’t working, Manuel enjoyed working in his yard and gardening. He especially enjoyed growing beautiful rose bushes. He always enjoyed playing with his little grandson, and was an avid Denver Broncos fan.
He is survived by Arcilia, his wife of more than 44 years of their home in Clovis; his son, Miguel Payen of Clovis and his daughter and son-in-law, Veronica and Carlos Anaya of Portales; his grandson, Sy Anaya; his mother, Anita Payen of Portales; a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Sofia Payen of Las Cruces, NM; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Analisa and Neil Bahakta of Carlsbad, NM, Sylvia Poynor of Portales and Marisol and Hobart Williams of Mesa, AZ; as well as many nieces and nephews and other family members. Mr. Payen was preceded in death by his father, Jesus Payen, his paternal grandparents, Guadalupe and Juan Payen and his maternal grandparents, Francisca and Severo Guerrero.
