Funeral services for Laura Roberson, 99, of Portales will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Fri., Oct 24, 2025 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Jerran Duty officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Brian Moore, Jody Moore, Christopher Smith, Tony Staggs, Brit Greathouse and Neil Greathouse serving as pallbearers.
Laura Roberson was born June 27, 1926 in the Rogers community to the home Mary Charlie (Bosley) and Jim Lenoir Thetford and passed from this life on Oct. 17, 2025. Mrs. Roberson graduated from Rogers High School in 1944. She received medical care from the Shriner’s Hospital in Kansas City until she was 18. At that time, she went to stay with her sister, Patsy in Portland, Or. After two years she returned to Portales, and on May 26, 1947, she was married to Charles Roberson. She was a faithful member of Portales Church for most of her lifetime.
Mrs. Roberson was a very happy and upbeat lady. She loved to write, but her life’s goal was to be a wife and mother. When her daughters went to work outside of their homes, Laura was delighted to care for her grandchildren.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Richard Moore of Portales, Janie and Gary Edge of Clovis and Katherine and Neil Greathouse of Willow Park, TX; seven grandchildren, Brian (Susan) Moore, Jody Moore, Christopher (Tonya) Smith, Kara (Tony) Staggs, Rana Greathouse, Jada Greathouse and Brit Greathouse; four great-grandchildren, Katie (Zack) Hazelwood, Derek Moore, Meagan Michelle Smith and Mariah Staggs; five great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Rodney Thetford of Portales; and a sister, Betty Turnbough of Amarillo, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Joe, Ted, Earl and Ludney Thetford, four sisters, Lillie Mae Wilson, Patsy Shugard, Doris Merritt, and Mary Belle Willis, her only son, Kenneth Roberson who died in 1995, a grandson, Blake Smith, a great-granddaughter, Brianna Moore, and by her beloved husband, Charles Roberson who died Nov. 21, 2023 after more than 76 years of marriage.
