Louis Rhodes Obituary

Funeral services for Louis Rhodes, 91, of Potales, will be held at 2:00 PM, Sat., Nov. 20, 2021 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Kelly Fulfer officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Willis Wade, Joey Dunsworth, Kyler Dunsworth, Chad Rhodes, Anthony Rhodes and Josh Plummer serving as pallbearers.

Louis Glenn Rhodes was born June 6, 1930 in Portales to the home of Ila Mattie (Modrall) and Robert Clemm Rhodes and died Nov. 15, 2021 in Portales.  Mr. Rhodes was a 1948 graduate of Portales High School.  His first employment was with the REA as a lineman.  He later went to work for the telephone company and worked on a road crew for about four years.  In 1952, he was moved to Silver City, and in 1954, he was transferred back to Portales.  In 1959, the company sent him to Santa Rosa where he remained until 1970.  At that time he was transferred to Bosque Farms.  By this time he had begun working in the office verifying repairs done in the field.  Following his retirement in 1982, he moved to LeFlor, OK and then in 1989 to Palmyra, IL to be close to his son and his family.  Late in the summer of 2018, he returned to Portales.

On July 18, 1949 in Portales he was married to Lavon Singleton.  The couple was married for more than 70 years before her death on Dec. 8, 2018.  Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes were members of the Methodist Church.  Together they remodeled every home that they ever lived in.  He enjoyed doing woodwork.  Among the things that he created were the picture frames for the paintings his wife had done.  When his sons were young, he was constantly involved in their interests, serving as a Scout Leader and as a Little League coach.

He is survived by a son, Larry Rhodes of Oklahoma City, OK; two daughters-in-law, Katy (Mrs. Howard) of Tolar, TX and Marcia (Mrs. Mike) Rhodes of Palmyra, IL; four grandchildren, Chad (Amber) Rhodes, Anthony Rhodes, Mary (Rusty) Evans, and Paula (Josh) Plummer; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.  In addition to his wife, Lavon, he was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, J. L. Rhodes and Herman Rhodes, two sisters, Doris Morgan and Oleta Dunsworth, two sons, Howard who died in 1981 and Mike who died in Nov. of 2020, a grandchild, Shawn Marie Rhodes, who died in 1989, and a daughter-in-law, Debbie Rhodes who died in Dec. of 2020.
