Louis Urioste, Sr. Obituary

The Rosary for Louis O. Urioste Sr., 83, of Portales, will be recited at 10:00 AM, Sat., June 1, 2019 at St. Helen Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 11:00 AM with Fr. Francisco Carbajal officiating and Deacon Daniel Chavez assisting. Burial will take place in the Portales Cemetery with Chuck Sotelo, Marcos Lopez, Christian Urioste, Jonathan Urioste, Daniel Lopez, Alex Garcia, Joseph Urioste and Alexander Urioste serving as pallbearers. All other grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers.

Louis O. Urioste Sr. was born April 20, 1936 in Delia, NM to the home of Jose N. Urioste and Coronacion (Urioste) and departed this life on May 27, 2019 in Portales, NM. 

In 1955, at the age of 19, Mr. Urioste married Mary M. Marquez (Molly). Mr. Urioste started his working career at the age of 10 as a dishwasher. He then moved on to work on the ranch, for the railroad, doing construction and as a carpenter for McGee and Calton Furniture and then for Coyan Furniture. In 1972, he and his brother Joe established Urioste Brothers Carpet Services, laying carpet throughout the area for many years. After his brother’s retirement in 1993, Louis carried on the tradition under Urioste & Sons.

Louis loved to dance, vacation with his family, play the guitar, watch western movies & game shows and always had his daily dose of Vitamin C (Calvert Extra). He competed in the Golden Gloves at Roy Walker in Clovis, NM and continued his enjoyment of the sport by watching it on television.

Louis was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by Molly Urioste, his wife of almost 64 years; five sons, Louis Urioste Jr., James Urioste and wife Elizabeth of Dallas, TX, Raymond Urioste and former wife Glorie Urioste, Larry Urioste and Florencio Urioste all of Portales; two daughters, Kathy Urioste and Veda Urioste, both of Portales, 20 grandchildren including Antoinette Urioste, whom they helped raise during her Mom’s transition to Albuquerque, NM, 17 great grandchildren, brother, Richard Urioste of Pojoaque, NM and a niece (who was like a sister), Margaret Segovia also of Portales.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Joe Urioste and two sisters Julia Lucero and Elvira Rael.
