Luther Thomas Edwards

Funeral services for Luther T. Edwards, 94, of Portales, will be at 3:00 PM, Fri., Mar. 6, 2020 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Kelly Fulfer officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Blayne Casey, Chris Steffen, Thomas Edwards, Matthew Rivers, Chase Carroll and Andrew Rivers serving as pallbearers.

Luther Thomas Edwards was born July 20, 1925 in Gustine, TX to the home of Myrtle May (McCollough) and Van Houston Edwards, and died Feb. 28,2020 in Clovis, NM.  He grew up in Gustine where he attended school.  He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War.  After his discharge, Mr. Edwards worked in construction, and was working in the Portales area when he met Peggy Rogers who was working at a local cafe.  They were married May 30, 1959 in Farwell, TX.  For 43 years he hauled milk for Audi Ellerd, AMPI and finally for Western Dairy Transport, finally stopping at the age of 83.  Mr. Edwards was never too tired to play with the kids when he came home from work.  All they had to do was ask him to play catch.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Carl Steffen of Portales and Shawn and Kim Edwards of Bay Town, TX; a daughter-in-law, Lisa (Mrs. Levi) Edwards of Clovis, NM: nine grandchildren, Carlton Casey, Melody Carroll, Chris Steffen, Cody Steffen, Levi Edwards II, Amanda Rivers, Thomas Edwards, Wesley Edwards and David Cole; and seven great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Fred Edwards, a sister, Bonnie Colbough, a son, Levi Edwards a daughter, Barbara Riley, a grandchild, and by his beloved wife, Peggy, who died April 2, 1998 after nearly 49 years of marriage.
