Marcia Johnson Cole Obituary

A Celebration of the Life of Marcia Anne (Johnson) Cole will be held at 11:00 AM (CDT), Friday, June 3, 2022 in the Sunset Terrace Memorial Cemetery in Farwell, TX and is dedicated to the praise, glory and honor of God.

Marcia Johnson Cole was the eldest child of Lucille (Lamp) Johnson and Dr. V. Scott Johnson of Clovis, New Mexico. She was born April 26, 1932 at 209 First Street, Farwell, Texas and passed from this life Thurs., May 26, 2022.  Marcia attended Farwell schools until eighth grade when her family moved to Clovis.

She was active in the Order of Rainbow and was a Past Worthy Advisor, A Grand Assembly Officer and Member of the Grand Cross of Colors. During high school, she directed a youth choir at First Methodist Church, was a soloist with the adult choir, was a member of Hi-A-K, Concert Chorus and G-Clef, and was soloist for community performances of The Messiah.

She graduated in the class of 1950.  She received an Associate in Arts degree from Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri, in 1953, majoring in Preschool Education. At Stephens, she was a vocal soloist with the Concert Chorus on the Mutual Broadcasting System, member of Sunrise Choir, President of Chi Delta Phi (creative writing honors), served on the Stephens Standard Board, and was Columbia Independent President. Her poetry and short stories were published in “The Standard”.

She completed her B.A. at Eastern New Mexico University in 1953 and was certified to teach Early Childhood, Kindergarten, Elementary, Voice and Creative writing. She attended the University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway in 1953 on a scholarship.

She was an instructor at ENMU on a graduate assistantship 1953-54, receiving her M.A. in Education in 1960. She was a certified Bethel Bible instructor and was active in Kirk of the Hills, Tulsa OK, First Baptist Church, Farwell and Broadway Baptist Church, Sands Springs, OK. She also published many educational writings and instructed workshops both at Eastern and for the Texas Middle School Conference in Dallas. 

She taught first grade in Albuquerque NM and kindergarten in Farwell. She taught reading, literature, creative writing, ESL and gifted/talented teacher in Farwell Junior High for twenty years, retiring in 1995. She was the junior high nominee for Teacher of the Year in 1994 and again in 1995. She was listed in Who’s Who Among American Teachers in 1994, 95 and 96.

She moved to Sand Springs, Oklahoma in August of 1996 to be near her grown children and first granddaughter. She inspired and loved all of her grandchildren.  She was a talented writer, won numerous awards for her work in all areas, and her novel, “Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh” was published in 2013. Most importantly, she wrote wonderful personalized picture books for her grandchildren and they will be treasured forever.

In addition to her love of God, family and education, Marcia’s lifelong passion was for sharing the beauty of our Lord’s creation in Holy Ghost Canyon, Santa Fe National Forest, New Mexico, with friends and family. Her joy of nature lives on with many.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tamara Anne, in 1959; her mother, Lucille (Lamp) Johnson, in 1987 and her father, Dr. V. Scott Johnson, in 1990, Sister, Nancy Currier, in 2018 and one niece, Lisa Averre.

Survivors include: Her son Clyde Cole III and daughters Delaney of Dallas, TX and Everly Stinson and son-in-law Bobby, of Fayetteville, AR. Her daughter, Dedi Skipper and husband Mark, of Sand Springs, OK. Her son Douglas Cole, and daughters, Sophie, of Longmont, CO and Alexandria, of Austin, TX. Her son, Mark Cole, wife Shona and their sons Matthew, Maximus and Mark Adam, and their daughters Lily, Laura and Annie, of Magnolia, Texas. Her brother, Dr. V. Scott Johnson II of Portales.  Two nieces, Linda Pont and Angela Johnson and two nephews, Michael Murphy and Richard Johnson.
