Funeral services for Martha Weir, 83, a longtime resident of the Causey community, will be held at 10:00 AM, Sat., Jan., 18, 2025 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Don Thomas officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Andrew Schaap, Tommy Alger, Steven Schaap, Austin Schaap, Kayla Alger, Kambrey Blakey, Lindsay Blakey and Mattison Blakey serving as pallbearers.  The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Friday evening, Jan. 17, from 6 to 8 PM.

Martha Jane Weir was born Dec. 1, 1941, in Lubbock County, TX to the home of Etta Marie (Birchfield) and George William “Tokie” Doty, and died on Jan. 9, 2025 in Clovis, NM.  Mrs. Weir’s family lived in Sudan when she began her schooling, but soon moved to Morton, where she graduated in 1960.   While she was in Junior HIgh, she played basketball, and during her high school years, Martha played the flute in the band.  After graduation, she attended West Texas State University, where she completed a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in Aug. of 1964.

On August 27, 1963, in El Paso, TX, she was married to Rex Lynn Weir.  They made their home in Causey where they farmed and ranched.  That remained her home until just recently when she moved to Clovis to be near her daughter.  For several years she worked in the Causey School, and later the Dora School before deciding to join Rex in the operation of their farm and ranch.  Martha and Rex were always together, and she worked alongside her husband, driving tractors and grain trucks, and doing anything else necessary to make things work smoothly.  She continued to drive a tractor even as recently as this past summer.

Martha enjoyed gardening, and canning and freezing her produce.  She took great pride in always having a well-kept and beautiful yard.  Martha was an excellent cook, and liked to try new recipes from Southern Living Magazine.  She kept an immaculate house, and she was a talented decorator.  Mrs. Weir also enjoyed doing needlepoint and quilting.

Martha was a faithful member of the Causey Church of Christ.  Recently, she had been attending the Dora Church of Christ, as well a Bible study at the Causey Baptist Church.  She also was a member of the Causey Homemaker’s Club.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandi and Larry Blakey of Portales and Sherri and Eddie Schaap of Clovis; seven grandchildren, Andrew Schaap of Clovis, Kayla (Tommy) Alger of Canyon, TX, Steven Schaap of Clovis, Austin (Airen) Schaap of Clovis, Kambrey Blakey of Artesia, Lindsay Blakey and her fiancé, Josh Carlson of Artesia, and Mattison Blakey of Las Cruces; nine great-grandchildren, Thomas, Cornelia and Gerrit Alger and Jackson, Holland, Willem, Anja, Henrik and Matthijs Schaap; and a sister, Deanie Posey of Lubbock, TX.  She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her beloved husband, Rex Weir, who died Aug. 31, 2023 after nearly 60 years of marriage.
