Mary Lee Obituary

Funeral services for Mary Lee, 87, of Floyd, NM will be held at 2:00 PM, Sat., Sept. 28, 2024 at the Floyd Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Wilcher officiating.  Burial will follow in the Floyd Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as pallbearers.

Mary Alice Lee, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2024, at the age of 87. Mary was born September 19, 1937, in Clayton, New Mexico to Odis Wainwright and Pearl Louella Francis Carroll. Mary was a lifelong resident of Roosevelt County, where she built a legacy of love, kindness, and service to her community.  Mary attended the Portales schools and married her childhood sweetheart, Wesley Huston Lee, on May 6, 1955, in Bethel. She shared over 55 years of devoted marriage, raising a family that was her pride and joy.

Mary was an active member of Floyd Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for many years.  Mary and Huston were a team throughout their marriage. Mary would recount that back before today’s technology, when Huston was the fire chief and they would get a fire call, Mary would call the firemen and let them know the location of the fire.  Mary was a farmer's wife, she helped drive cotton trailers to the gin, peanut wagons to the mill or other pieces of equipment necessary in their agricultural business. Many friends and family have enjoyed one of Mary’s  “tailgate” meals in the fields during harvest.  Mary had many artistic talents, she decorated cakes for the community, she also did woodworking,  photography and was a master seamstress.  Mary was active in the school PTA, was ever present watching sports events of her kids and grandkids, she even helped sponsor and drive to FHA conventions. Mary was named Lions Club Citizen of the Year in 1996. A master in the kitchen, Mary had a heart for hospitality, spending most of her life leveraging the first to fulfill the second. There are few if any in the Floyd community who have not experienced some of Mary’s hospitality. She loved to share a cup of coffee and one of her signature cinnamon rolls with family or friends when they visited. She depended on her faith to carry her through the difficult times of life. With a quick wit, ever present positive outlook and a smile that could light up any room, Mary was a gentle, powerful force.  Known affectionately as “Granny” to her grandkids, GG ma to her great grandkids, she leaves a legacy of a life well lived.

Mary is preceded in death by; husband, Wesley Huston Lee, her parents, Odis Wainwright and Pearl Louella Carroll, her brother Joseph Wayne Carroll and Sister Louella Fern Carroll Ford, Hazel May Carroll Owen, sons-in-laws Melvin Ray Beard and M.
