Ronald "Ron" Obenhaus Obituary

Funeral services for Ron Obenhaus, 63, of Portales, will be held at 2:00 PM, Sat., Mar. 13, 2021 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Portales with Jimmy Roberts and Scott P Reeves officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Larry Luce, Bryan Luce, Tim Canales, Brad McWherter, Charlie Self, Doug Gillam and Clint Holloman serving as pallbearers.  All of the E.N.M.U. IT Department will be honorary pallbearers.

Ronald Neal Obenhaus was born Aug. 23, 1957 in Clovis to the home of Juanita “Jean” (Carlisle) and Wendell Afton Obenhaus, and died Mar. 8, 2021 in Lubbock, TX.  Ron grew up in Portales, and was a 1975 graduate of Portales High School.  He initially attended NMSU in Las Cruces, but after he was injured in 1978, he returned to Portales and finished his degrees at Eastern New Mexico University.  He completed a dual Bachelor’s Degree in 1982 in Math and Computer Science, and a Master’s Degree in Math in 1984.  He began his working career at what was then known as the Computer Center at the university, where he worked as a System’s Analyst.  Ron continued working in the IT Department until his death, eventually becoming the Administrative Manager and Security Officer for the Information and Technology for E.N.M.U.  Ron was an expert in computer, and in the words of his son, “he knew every shortcut command known to man.”  Even though Ron was in a wheelchair, he was never disabled.  He worked and accomplished as much as any able-bodied man.

On July 16, 1983 in Portales, he was married to his childhood sweetheart, Lisa Lynn Holloman.  Their home was blessed with the birth of three sons.  Ron and his family were active members of the Emmanuel Baptist Church for many years.  During those years, Ron sometimes taught classes at the church.

As a youth, Ron loved to go water skiing.  Ron was an avid sports fan, and loved to watch football and baseball in particular.  Like many others in the area, he was a Dallas Cowboys fan.  Ron faithfully attended his son’s games, and even managed to play catch with them in the backyard.

Ron is survived by Lisa, his wife of more than 37 years; his three sons, Jordan and Keatan Obenhaus both of Clovis, and Micah Obenhaus of Portales; and a sister and brother-in-law, Rhonda and Larry Luce of Mebane, NC.  He was preceded in death by both of his parents, as well as two brothers, Rodney in 1968 and Randy Obenhaus in 2018.
