Troy Lee Hinton was born Nov. 30, 1955 in Hobbs, NM to the home of Wanda Jean (Gardner) and Elmer Lee Hinton and died on the evening of Dec. 29, 2025 in Portales.  Troy grew up in Roswell where he graduated from Roswell High School in 1973.  While in school, Troy played the clarinet in the school band.  Troy began his career in grocery stores while he was in high school, and continued to work in super markets in Albuquerque while attending classes at the University of New Mexico.  Troy earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.  Following his graduation, he worked in a market in Alamogordo.  On Jan. 22, 1983, in Sacramento, NM he was married to Rhonda Deborah “Debbie” Smith.  The couple had two sons before her death in 1992.

For several years after their marriage, Troy managed a grocery store in Hobbs.  In the early 1990’s they moved to Portales, and then in 1993, he relocated to Alamogordo to be the Advertising Manager for the VanWinkle Food Stores.  In 2000, he purchased the Portales VanWinkle Food Market, and had lived in Portales since that time.  While in the grocery business, he attended several buying shows in various places including Hawaii and Florida.

After selling the store in 2004, he became a real estate broker for Home Spot.  In 2015 he joined Morgan Realty where he was employed until 2022.  Since that time, he had occupied himself with his various properties and as a landlord.

Troy was a member of the First United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed being in the outdoors, hunting and fishing and backpacking.  Troy was able to accomplish anything he set his mind to do.  He enjoyed tinkering and fixing things, and for a time he built and sold computers.  He was very intelligent and financially savvy.  He enjoyed participating in family activities and projects.

Troy was a loving father and grandfather whose kindness meant so much to his family.  He was a respected member of the Portales community, always willing to lend a hand.  In his early years, Troy especially enjoyed snow skiing, sailing catamarans water skiing and spending time with his brother, Alan, forming memories that remained close to his heart throughout his life.  He will be remembered with love by all who knew him.

He is survived by two sons, Lee Hinton and Evan and his wife, Amanda Hinton of Portales; and two grandchildren, Evan Leon and Dixie Hinton.  Besides his wife, Debbie, he was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Alan Hinton.
